Life Story
Joseph Kabena Nyamison — "Joe" to those who knew and loved him — was born on 23 May 1995 at the VALCO Hospital, Tema. He was the first child and only son of Mr. Joseph Kobina Nyamison and Madam Winifred Andzie-Quainoo of Tema, and a devoted brother to his five sisters.
A Brilliant Beginning
Joe's gift for learning announced itself early. He attended Deks Educational Institute, Community 8, Tema, from crèche through Junior High School. So evident was his ability that his Class Two teacher, Mr. Nortey of Osu, wrote a heartfelt letter to his father urging that the boy be advanced straight to Class Four. From Class Four onward he was consistently top of his class, emerging as the best graduating pupil in the 2009 BECE and serving as Assistant Boys' School Prefect in his final year.
Achimota and a Public Stage
At Achimota Senior High School, Joe read Science and continued to shine, his name a fixture at the school's Speech and Prize-Giving Days; across his four years — the last batch of the four-year senior high system — he carried home best-in-form awards in fifteen subjects. As a member of the historic Cadbury House, he was chosen to represent the school before a Ghana Broadcasting Corporation crew filming a documentary on the late President Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills, himself a Cadbury old boy; the fifteen-minute feature became compulsory viewing on national television. Overwhelmingly elected School Head Boy in 2012, Joe later withdrew from a contested re-run for the sake of peace — an early measure of his character.
A Calling to Medicine
After excelling in the 2013 WASSCE, Joe earned admission to read Medicine at both the University of Ghana, Legon, and KNUST, choosing the University of Ghana Medical School, where he qualified in 2019. His flair for words shone at his class's induction into the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, where a vote of thanks in his signature "spoken-word" style earned a standing ovation. Honoured as "Best in Psychiatry," he found in that award the calling that would shape his career — though his boyhood dream had always been neurosurgery.
A Doctor in Service
Joe completed his two-year housemanship at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (2020/2021) and the Koforidua Government Hospital (2021/2022), with locum work at the Narh-Bita Hospital, Tema. He earned a Master of Public Health from the University of Ghana, Legon (August 2023). Posted to the Pantang Hospital in December 2022, he served as a Medical Officer and later started Residency in Psychiatry and passed the West African College of Physicians examination in Ibadan, Nigeria, in March 2026. He was preparing to sit the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians examination on 19 May 2026 — the very day of his passing.
His Family
In Dr. (Med.) Maviel Philomena Benni — a fellow physician, a devout Christian, and his friend of nine years — Joe found his sweetheart. The two married in November 2024, with their engagement on 20 November and an all-white wedding on 23 November. He fondly credited Maviel with teaching him to drive. Their union was blessed with a son, Akyedze Sese Kadmiel Nyamison, seven months old and the very image of both his parents. Together they held a shared vision: "to be an exemplary union — a conduit for God's liberating will."
Faith and Life Beyond Medicine
Joe's faith anchored everything he did. A member of ICGC Cornerstone Temple, the Word and Spirit Feasts, and the Men's Mentorship Group of OneWay Africa, he ministered through spoken word, poetry, and acting, and gave generously of himself and his means to missionary work. Away from medicine, he was an accomplished basketball player who lifted several trophies in medical school (with LeBron James as his idol), a die-hard Manchester United supporter who admired Cristiano Ronaldo, and a spirited player of Ludo, Snakes-and-Ladders, and Oware.
His Passing
Joe was the very picture of health — neither hypertensive nor diabetic, "as fit as a fiddle" — which makes his loss all the harder to comprehend. He last spoke with his parents on Sunday, 17 May 2026, cheerful about his upcoming examination and full of news that his wife and baby were doing well. When calls to him went unanswered the next day, his father travelled to the Pantang Doctors' Flats at dawn on Tuesday, only to learn that colleagues had found Joe semi-conscious and rushed him to the University of Ghana Medical Centre. Transferred later to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, he passed away at 15:45 hours on 19 May 2026, five days short of his thirty-first birthday.
He is survived by his wife, Maviel; his son, Akyedze; his parents; his five sisters; and a host of family, friends, colleagues, and patients whose lives he touched. He is remembered as brilliant, humble, and respectful — a man of deep faith, generous spirit, and warm presence.
Absent in the body, present with the Lord Jesus.
Joe, rest in perfect peace. Amen.
